Journée de la francophonie yukonnaise 2020: Let's celebrate online!
Whitehorse, May 14, 2020 - The Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY) is excited to invite Yukoners to celebrate the 14th annual Journée de la francophonie yukonnaise (JFY) from the comfort of their own homes on May 15, 2020. Since 2007, this day has been recognizing the role Francophones have played in developing the Yukon for nearly 200 years. The JFY helps give the Yukon community a better understanding and appreciation of Francophone culture and its strong presence in the territory.
"This day is not only an important way to recognize Francophones' contribution to the development of the Yukon, but also an opportunity to reconnect as a Francophone community in the Yukon. This year, we won't be able to gather under one roof, but I know many of us will take advantage of this totally Yukon-Francophone evening remotely," said AFY president Jeanne Beaudoin.
"The Government of Yukon is proud to pay tribute to the territory's Francophone community and support celebrations marking the 14th Yukon Francophonie Day. The bonds of language and culture keep us all united and strong. I would like to congratulate all citizens, artists, businesses and organizations that contribute to the vitality of Yukon's Francophone community," declared Mr. John Streicker, Minister responsible for the French Language Services Directorate.
This Friday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. on the Facebook event, and on the website http://jfy.afy.yk.ca, Yukoners will be invited to celebrate the JFY in their living rooms with magician Magic Ben, humorist Ulysse Girard, and the music group Soir de semaine. This year's JFY by video is sure to delight young and old alike, and has special surprises in store for the community.
The AFY would like to thank the Government of Yukon and the Government of Canada for their financial contribution and support for the Yukon Francophone community, and the cities of Whitehorse and Dawson, for flying the Yukon Francophone flag every May 15 in recognition of the day.
